Thickness: published US supplier values from Metal Supermarkets, inch values kept as listed. Millimeters = inches × 25.4. Weight is calculated from carbon steel, 7.85 g/cm³ (0.2836 lb/in³).
READ THE CHART
Gauge is a table entry.
Steel sheet gauge goes back to the US Manufacturers’ Standard Gauge, which was defined by weight per square foot rather than by a clean thickness step. That is why the thickness jumps between gauges are uneven, and why a lower gauge number means a thicker sheet.
Hot-rolled and cold-rolled mild steel are both ordered against this series. Mill tolerances allow the delivered sheet to vary from the nominal value, so measure the actual sheet with a micrometer before you calculate a bend or a flat blank.
